We finally received the rain we were hoping for, probably the first time this season the weatherman got the forecast right. All our rivers have a fresh new flow of cool clear water. The Bonaventure, Petite and Grand Cascapedia’s were getting very low, but are now back to and above normal for this time of the season.
The weather system passed a little more to the Northeast so the Grand Cascapedia did’t receive the amount of rain the Bonaventure did. The Grand went from 10 cubic meters per second to 15 overnight, giving it a much need boost to get fish moving. The Petite Cascapedia went from 10 to almost 20 bringing the water level up a welcome 8 inches. The Bonaventure was the big winner bringing its flow from 12 cubic meters per second to 35 and giving us a 15 inch rise in water levels!
Sunny days and warm weather over the past two weeks have made fishing more challenging, we have plenty of salmon in all our pools but they were a little harder to catch. Last weeks full moon and high tides brought a good run of fresh salmon in our rivers as well. The weather man is calling for showers over the next few days as well, keeping our fingers crossed.
The rise of water this past week gave us some good fishing. Needless to say all our guides are sporting a big smile. Fishing was good by mid week and we did manage to land a good number of nice fish including a few big ones. The biggest fish of the week was hooked and landed by ten year old Teo Panzer, a nice 30 plus pound salmon on the Petite Cascapedia. Teo is no stranger to fly-fishing, his father Pancho owns and operates one of the best trout lodges in Patagonia, Carerileufu River Lodge . Congratulations Teo!
The hot fly’s for the week have been a mixture of dry’s and small wets. Green and Dark Brown Bombers were responsible for most of the catches. In the wet fly department, the John Olin, Black Bear Green Butt and Silver Rat did the job, the Green Machine is catching up pretty quickly as one of the best fly’s. The John Olin and Green machine were the winners on the Petite. The sizes that are working best are number 8’s 10’s and 12’s.
Until next week,
Tight Lines,
Glenn
