River Report

Salmon Lodge Fishing & River Report September 25th to 30th, 2020

October first seemed so far away, yet here we are and I cannot seem to figure out where the time went. Our four-month season has passed in what feels like the blink of an eye. As we serve our last breakfast of the season and send off our dear guests, we are all left in the dust wondering – now what? The words to describe the feelings we have at the end of another season are so difficult to find. We are all honestly filled with mixed emotions.

But enough about feelings, let’s talk about the week we’ve had! From the fishing to the company and the food, all were very well taken care of. The fishing was great until the very last cast of the last day of the season. The weather started out cool and crisp however the last few days of the season it warmed up to summer temperatures.  The colours we now see in our mountains and along the river are absolutely breath taking. It truly is the most beautiful time of the year here in our backyards.

Peter Bennett continued his success through to his last visit of the season, great job Peter!

The beautiful Bonaventure River has had yet another successful week. Her water levels remained between 7 & 8 cubic meters per second however with the warmer temperatures during the last few days the Salmon began chasing dry flies again!  The Grand Cascapedia continued to produce like it had all season long.  Its water levels held fairly steady starting out at 18 cubic meters per second and finished out the season at 15 cubic meters per second.  The Petite Cascapedia was good to us all season. The Petite much like the Bonaventure held between 7 & 8 cubic meters per second which is a little below normal for late September.

The Salmon’s choice of flies this week were mostly the Red Francis and Alley’s Shrimp. Any colours that match our mountains at the moment – yellows, oranges and reds seem to attract the salmon.  During the last few days Blue & Brown bombers were also working great!

Great to see such a beautiful Salmon swimming off after a successful release!
