The weather man cooked up another hot week for us on the Gaspe Coast. Our past week, just like the one before it, was a mixture of warmer days and high humidity. However, this did create a couple evening thunder-storms, which thankfully brought some rain. Either way, rain or shine, there is no better place to be than surrounded by great friends, good old fishing stories, delicious meals all under the roof of a fishing lodge.
Our three rivers are getting close to the lower spectrum of their average water levels for this time of the season. The Bonaventure began her week flowing at 10.5 cubic meters per second. Our Tuesday evening thunder-storm managed to rise the river a cubic meter but that’s about it. The Bonaventure River finished her week at 9.25 cubic meters per second.
Tuesday evening’s rain fell in all the right places to help The Grand Cascapedia. The Grand began and ended her week flowing at a rate of 13.5 cubic meters per second but managed to rise above 23 cubic meters per second mid-week. The Petite began the week flowing at 7.5 cubic meters per second and ended around the same value. Sunny days and warm weather over the past two weeks have made fishing a little more challenging. We have plenty of salmon in all our low-water holding pools but catching their attention has been a little more difficult. One positive note that has been helping our river conditions and exciting the salmon is the cooler evenings we began having near the end of the week.
Dry flies continue to do the trick for the most part of this week! Bombers in a light blue or light brown with a splash of green on the tale end seem to be catching the salmon’s eye.
Tight Lines & Stay safe,
Julia
