River Report

Salmon Lodge fishing Report June 11th to 17, 2012

The second week of the season has come and gone and despite low water conditions for this time of the year the fishing has been great! Fresh Salmon are entering our rivers on every tide. With lower than normal water levels on the Bonaventure, fish are heading straight up river to the upper sections.  We took our first salmon on a dry fly this week as well as our first grilse of the season. The “first grilse of the year award” goes to Maitland McLean of Aberdeen, Scotland, who was fishing out of Camp Bonaventure.  If I remember correctly this is not the first time Maitland caught our first grilse. The water levels in the branches of the Grand Cascapedia are too low to fish at the moment.  The Petite Cascapedia opened on Friday the 15th, our guides we out in full force on the Petite Friday seeing fresh salmon in most of the pools, and catching a few as well.

Hot flies this past week were the Out to Lunch, Stone Ghost, Green Highlander and the Blue Charm. brown and green bombers were the dry’s of choice. We are beginning to use smaller fly’s as the water levels drop. Strange however because even in the low water the fresh run salmon haven’t shyed away from no. 4’s and 6’s.
